Several unusual things happened for this run.
First of all, as I had reminded others, and posted on the Member Area of
the web page, we were to meet at the golden arches at the Bowmansdale exit of
Rt. 15. I assumed we were to
meet at noon. Rushing to get gas
and to just make it to the parking lot “shortly after noon” I was surprised
that everyone had already left. It
was unusual for a club event to leave the starting point that timely.
As I waited in the parking lot for others to arrive, I watched the clouds
breaking up from the downpour I went through the evening before.
The sun was starting to make it through the clouds and a nice breeze was keeping
the temperature moderate. As it was
already quarter-after 12, I decided to get a sandwich since I hadn’t had time
for lunch due to my efforts to get there on time.
As I sat eating, watching cars come into the parking lot I saw Gene
Schrader pull in about 12:30. Maybe
we were to meet at 1? I began to
feel a little more comfortable. However,
when I came out, I started to worry again as the Spit was the only Triumph in
the parking lot. However, I was
determined to wait to see if others arrived, as it was too late to run home and
get the newsletter, which I had just taken out of the car.
No problem the weather was clearing and in another 15 minutes the
Triumphs started to arrive.
Although there were only 6 cars, which is
unusual for such a nice day in the prime of driving season, we still needed our
leader, Tom Miceli.
Tom arrived and announced that as it was a small group, we could change in
the route and divert through Messiah College.
We crossed the covered bridge where the students were getting their inner
tubes out for a float down the creek. They
also paused - to see the TR parade.
We then toured to our mid point at Pinchot Park for a break where the
cars drew more interest and a young couple that said their grandfather had a
Triumph like the car on the end – a TR6.
We traveled some very “Triumph roads”
along (I’m not sure how many) creeks on what had to be a run record for single
lane bridges. We arrived at Toms
place for a nice cool picnic in the shade of Tom’s back yard with pool and
swings.
Ellis Wolf was already there with his
Spitfire.
New
members Tom and Sue Billet from Grantville then arrived with their newly
acquired TR4A, and John Burkett of Claysburg (out Altoona way) who operates
Triumph Works also showed up in his TR6 for the picnic.
John provided some insights as to my Sprit's rear spring and why the TR6 may
have had gas in the crankcase after a period of storage.
Joe Laurito thought he could go swingin’
with two women.
Unfortunately, that relaxing thought crashed
to the ground and they ended up on their backs from lack of support.
When you see Joe, ask him to explain his swingin’ adventure, but I’m
sure he strongly advises against such activity. Sue Kistler did some fancy stops on hills and had to pull on
her heat to remedy her hot running TR3 that wanted more air through the radiator
than our leisurely pace allowed. The
only TR 7/8 model in evidence on this run was on the cake -
which went very well with the ice cream, thank you..
The last unusual thing Sue K noted for this, the 4th run of
the year, was since Mr. K wasn’t able to make this run, all cars that started
the run completed it successfully.
